Jumbo English Camp: Athgala Junior School, Kochchikade
The much-awaited event, the Jumbo English Camp of Athgala Junior
School got under way on July 22, 2006, at the Main Hall. The activities
were conducted by the students, with the assistance of the resource
teachers, Annette, Modwin, Ruwanthi and teacher-in-charge of English,
Mrs. Rohini Tissera.
The campers worked out the programme following a common time-table.
The camp was held with the participation of the Parish Priest Rev. Fr.
Noel Nonis, Zonal Director of Education M. L. D. N. Titus, Director
Primary Education Maliadda, Director of English Antony Fernando, the
Principal of Athgala Junior School, Palitha Subasinghe, Sponsors A. M.
W. Company, resource teachers, past pupils and well-wishers.
The Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Noel Nonis commenced the proceedings of
the English Camp with blessings. The traditional oil lamp was lit by the
invitees, and the welcome song was sung by the students. The welcome
address was delivered by Yashodara Dilhani and the vote of thanks was
given by Shashika Vaaz.
In this event, a team of 70 students, three teachers of English,
Annette, Modwin, Ruwanthi and the teacher-in-charge of English Mrs.
Rohini Tissera gave life to Athgala Junior School. All the items were
conducted in English, and some of the group activities were, Ice break,
Confidence games, game shows, drama, singing session, outdoor games,
camp fire songs and camp fire activities.
The campers were divided into six groups, namely, Amity, Peace,
Harmony, Unity, Joy and Love. The theme of the English camp was "English
Creates Amity". The campers were given necklaces, and a one-inch cut of
the necklace was the rule for using vernacular languages. The most
eye-catching event of the day was, the campers walking with lanterns in
their hands to light the campfire.
It was a fantastic experience for the children. For most of them, it
was their first experience on stage. This camp primarily focussed on
their activities. It was entertaining. These children who remained
unnoticed and unrewarded all this time had learnt something new. They
had their meals and sang songs.
Colourful T-shirts were provided by A. M. W. Company to all
participants. Meals were offered by Harindra Ranasinghe from Singer Sri
Lanka. All the students received a certificate of participation.
The success of the camp is the fruit of the dedication of the English
quality development team of the Negombo Zone, and the good guidance and
advice of the Zonal director of Education, Director Primary Education,
Director of English, the Principal, the English teachers of Athgala
Junior School, parents and teacher-in-charge of English Mrs. Rohini
Tissera.
This team that works on a volunteer basis is a great help, and the
necessary guidance and incentive to study the English Language given by
the director of English, Anthony Fernando is commendable. Pictured are
some of the highlights from the Jumbo English Camp Athgala Junior
School. |
