Anil Obeyesekera's death an irreparable loss

The death of Anil Obeyesekere, President's Counsel, is an irreparable
loss not only to Lake House, but to the entire country. His unexpected
and untimely demise is an unbearable loss to the country, to his family
and to all of us.
Having held the top seats at Sri Lanka Telecom and the Petroleum
Corporation, Obeyesekere held the post of Chairman of Associated
Newspapers of Ceylon Limited at the time of his death.
He hails from a long-standing prestigious lawyer-family. A proud
product of S.Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia, Anil Obeyesekere proved his
class as an eminent lawyer, a pioneer of progressive politics and a
clever administrator, who made use of his experiences to serve the
people.
As President Mahinda Rajapaksa has pointed out in his condolence
message from China, Obeyesekere did not confine himself to his
profession alone, but extended beyond, to reach the realms of politics.
He did so with the purity of heart to serve the people of this country.
His contribution to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has been immense,
especially during the time the party was out of power . Obeyesekere
played a key role as a lawyer in post violence cases and safeguarded the
interests of his party supporters. "I recall with gratitude, his
dedicated contribution to the cause of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and
his immense service to the country by holding high offices such as the
Sri Lanka's Trade Commissioner in Czechoslovakia, Chairman of the
Petroleum Corporation, Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom and finally as the
Chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a post
he held till he passed away," the President stated in his condolence
message.
Having taken oaths as an advocate in 1966, Obeyesekere PC built up a
large practice and appeared in a number of sensational cases in Sri
Lanka. In addition to being an eminent lawyer he held high positions in
the public service as well as in the political arena as an active member
of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.he took up the position of Administrative
Secretary and was a member of the Executive Committee.
The demise of Anil Obeyesekere is an irreparable loss to ANCL He won
the hearts of all at Lake House and showed a keen interest in improving
the quality of the newspapers.
Our late chairman was a very simple and kind-hearted man and it was a
pleasure to work with him. He shared his vast knowledge and experience
of 35-years of service as a lawyer with those he came into close
contact. It was a privilege for all of us to work under his able
leadership.
As he was faithful to the duties entrusted to him, he was assigned
with many responsible tasks as the leaders were sure of his dedication
and sincerity .
He never failed to guide those came to him for guidance and advice.
He was also extremely helpful to those who needed help. His untimely
death shocked everyone at Lake House. We have lost a friend indeed. He
was an able leader with a vision. He treated all of us as his sons and
daughters and earned respect as an honest and dedicated administrator.
The funeral took place at the General Cemetery, Borella amidst a
large gathering last Wednesday evening.
Anil Obeyesekere PC, leaves behind his wife Iranganie, son Prasanna
and daughter Iromie. May he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nirvana.
