Sri Lanka is proud of its entrepreneurs and some of them have earned
prestigious positions in the world business community, said Minister of
Export Development and International Trade Prof. G. L. Peiris.
He was addressing the inaugural session of the 85th Textile Institute
World Conference. Prof Peiris said that some Sri Lankan entrepreneurs
who have set up factories in India were highly praised at an
international seminar held in Chennai recently.
The Sri Lankan garment sector took up the challenges and in a short
period of time they overcame the challenges due to their wise and
far-sighted decisions. Adaptability to the changing circumstances by the
garment sector was remarkable, he said. The leaders of the textile
industry in Sri Lanka handled the Sri Lankan human resource well and it
was one of the key factors of the garment sector's success, he said.
The conference was inaugurated at the Cinnamon Grand on Thursday.
Prof. Peiris was the chief guest. Krishan Hundal of Marks and Spencer
Prof. Lakdas D. Fernando - Conference Chairman, Prof. Mervyn Davies
Chairman of Council of the Textile Institute and Dr. W. A. Wimalaweera,
President, Textile Institute Sri Lanka Section were present. Prof.
Lakdas Fernando in his welcome address said that the 85th Textile
Institute World Conference will have 67 technical papers from scholars,
researchers and professionals from about 25 countries.
"Sri Lanka's economy today depends to a large extent on the apparel
export industry which provides substantial employment and foreign
exchange", he said.
Ashroff Omar, CEO, Brandix Lanka Ltd and Chairman Joint Apparel
Associations Forum and Mahesh Amalean, Chairman MAS Holdings Ltd, were
the keynote speakers at the three-day conference.
The theme of the conference was "Concept to Consumer".
