Kandyan dancing at its best
Seven budding young exponents of Kandyan
dancing will dance their way into the hearts of the audience as

Pubudu, Manuri and Savindri,

they enthrall them with their maiden public performance to be
held at the Lionel Wendt theatre on March 6 at 6.30 p.m. They will prove
that Kandyan dancing is an ideal form of dance that nurtures latent
talent finds expression in creative skills at a very early age.
These seven pupils, Wathsala Fernando, Manuri Ratnaweera, Savindri
Perera, Pubudu Apparakke, Chamini Herath and Sharindri Abeysinghe are
students of Museaus College while Rasela Jayasooriya is a student of
ACBT Colombo.
They have been tirelessly committed to dance to perfect their skills
and achieve the heights they have soared to. They will dance to prove
that not only to the Sri Lankan lover of Kandyan dancing, but to the
whole world the intricacies of the steps which depict the various facets
of our ancient culture.

Shavindri and Ranella

Mrs. Visha Manohari De Silva, Teacher in charge of Visha School of
Dance - Dehiwela is the person behind them. An old girl of Visakha
Vidyalaya. She initially learned dancing from Mrs. Hema Basnayake and
later joined Chithrasena and Vajira and went on to become a leading
dancer in their dance troupe. At present she is the dancing teacher at
Museaus College, Colombo 7.
Under her guidance these seven students have learned all forms of
Kandyan dancing to the best of their ability.
This "Kalaeliya" or first public recital mark them out as being fully
fledged dancers who will continue to demonstrate their talents and
skills contributing to win acclaim in the art of Kandyan dancing. |
