The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) will launch a
housing construction program in partnership with the private sector. The
NHDA has identified nine buildable land plots in Hanwella, Ja-ela, Galle,
Homagama, Kundasale, Kurunegala and Yakkala for this project.
Affordable housing schemes will be constructed in and around Colombo
for public servants and others under the Mahinda Chintana concept.
The NHDA has constructed more than fifteen mega housing schemes, each
comprising over three-hundred housing units to cater to middle and low
income earners and public servants.
One thousand one hundred and seventy five housing units will be built
under the private sector partnership housing schemes. The Housing and
Common Amenities Ministry has already distributed two thousand five
hundred land plots to build houses.
Loans to the value of Rs. 100,000 at low interest and technical
know-how will be given to the recipients through the NHDA. A spokesman
for the Housing Ministry said that nineteen private sector developers
and financiers have shown interest in the housing projects. The
developers have elaborated on their financial capabilities together with
their experience, he said.
The Housing Ministry will publish a monthly educational journal, 'Janasevana'
from next month to educate the people on low cost housing technology. A
radio program Janasevana is broadcast daily on the SLBC in Sinhala for
the same purpose.
The NHDA on the instructions of the Housing Ministry has launched a
crash program islandwide to recover Rs. 300,000 million outstanding loan
instalments.
