Vidura College u.13 inter-school cricket tourney Aug. 11 and 12

CRICKET: Catching them young and promoting the game among the lesser known schools in Kotte and Nugegoda areas - this is the aim Vidura College, Nawala, Rajagiriya in their inaugural 30-over under 13 Invitation Cricket Tournament to be played on August 11 and 12 at Sri Jayawardenapura Maha Vidyalaya and Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte grounds.

The man behind the scene is Upali de Silva - the former master-in-charge of cricket Royal, now Sports Coordinator of Vidura College, Nawala, Rajagiriya.

Six teams have been invited to play in the tournament and they will be divided into two groups and will play each other. The teams are: Sri Jayawardenapura MV, Kotte, Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte, Homagama Central College, Subithi Maha Vidyalaya, Godagamuwa, Homagama, Ananda New Model School, Rattanapitiya, Boralesgamuwa and Vidura College, Nawala.

The winners of the two groups will play in the final. The winners will be awarded the Vidura College Challenge Trophy and the runners-up will also be awarded a trophy. The customary man-of-the match awards will be made for each match and all players will be awarded a certificate to mention that they participated in the tourney.

A tournament committee has been appointed and it consists of D. G. Sumanasekera - Principal, Vidura College as Chairman, Upali de Silva - Tournament Secretary - the Sports Coordinator of Vidura College, Ramesh - the cricket coach and Wasantha Jayaratna - the master-in-charge of cricket.

All teams will have to bring their own equipment including the cricket balls which should be 4.5 ounces in weight. The points will be given as follows - winners 5 points and a "tie" will earn a team two points each.

All players should be under 13 years of age on August 15. Entries close on July 18 with Upali de Silva - Sports Coordinator of Vidura College.

There will be special awards to be made - Best Batsman of Tournament, Best Bowler of Tournament, Best Fielder of Tournament and Most valuable Player of Tournament.
