Kandy SC in 48-14 win over Army

RUGBY: Kandy Sports club beat Sri Lanka Army by 48 poinits (4 goals, 4 tries) to 14 (2 goals) after leading 33-7 at half time in their Caltex Division League Rugby match played at Havelock park yesterday.

Centre Pradeep Liyanage (3), winger Sanjeeva Jayasinghe (2), winger Mohamed Jabber (2) and No 8 Dushantha Lewke (1) scored tries for Kandy SC with Nalaka Weerakkody (2) and Eranda Weerakkody (2)making the conversions. Scrum half Tharindu Dharshana and flanker Nishantha Kobbekaduwa scored the tries for Army with Kapila Knowlton converting both tries. Referee: Nizam Jamaldeen


Quadrangular meet on July 28

ATHLETICS: The second annual quadrangular track and field meet between Maris Stella College (host) Royal, Trinity and S. Thomas' Mount Lavinia, will be held on July 28, at Maris Stella Grounds, Negombo.

This meet is organised by the Maris Stella Sports Association in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Amateur Athletic Association. The meet has attracted over 250 athletes from the age groups of Under 11 to 19. All events will be straight finals. In the inaugural meet (2006), Maris Stella emerged champions Royal were runners-up.

This year the meet will be keenly contested, giving that much needed exposure at competitive level for the future young prospects. The SLAAA has given its blessings. An invitation schools Relay (both/boys/girls) will be an added attraction. It will commence at 8.30 a.m.


Inter-Bank over 40 tourney Aug. 4

CRICKET: The over 40 Inter-Bank Six a Side cricket tournament organised by Hatton National Bank will take place on August 4 at the MCA grounds. Nine banks have confirmed their participation and eleven teams will be formed with HNB and Bank of Ceylon fielding two teams each.

The participating banks are; Seylan, Sampath, HNB 'Gold', HNB Platinum, People's Bank, NDB Bank, Union Bank, Bank of Ceylon 'A' and 'B', NSB and PABC. The teams have been divided into two groups. In group 'A' :Seylan Bank will meet Sampath Bank in the opening match.

Host HNB 'Platinum' will take on Union Bank in the opener of group 'B'. Bank of Ceylon are the defending champions and Sampath Bank were the runners-up on the last occasion.
