UNP rejects reports on leadership change

The main opposition UNP yesterday rejected recent newspaper reports that certain party members were planning to oust Ranil Wickremesinghe from the party leadership and appoint another party stalwart as the new leader.

UNP, General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told the Sunday Observer that the party's march to gain power in the country cannot be stopped with such malicious reports.

He said the objective of some people is to weaken the morale of thousands of countrywide party supporters by making unnecessary statements and also to obstruct the party's future activities.

The UNP, General Secretary also said that at a time when the party leader has built up a strong rapport with foreign leaders no party member wants to make changes in the party leadership.

He also asked the Government to withdraw the additional tax

of Rs. 56, charged on fuel as a temporary relief for the poor people in the country.
