CR in smashing 44-8 win over CH
By Ranjan Anandappa
RUGBY: CR and FC maintained their unbeaten record when they
beat CH and FC by 44 points (5 goals, 2 penalties, 1 drop goal) to 8 (1
try and one penalty) in their Caltex Rugby League match played at
Longden Place yesterday.
The expected competitiveness was missing as a superior ‘CR’ outfit
completely dominated from the outset, despite some sporadic moves
initiated by the losers. The Maitland Crescent club scored a solitary
try through their winger Niranjan Wickremaratne and a penalty was put
over by fly-half Omar Hassan.
The ‘Red Shirts’ open scoring through a Dev Anand penalty in the
fourth minute of the match, and then went on to plant two tries through
winger Nishan de Silva who gave the finishing touches to a Mohamed
Sherif move and then number 8 Dushanth Lewke powered his way to score a
push over try.
Dev Anand added the extra points to both tries. Dev Anand who
excelled in the first half put over two more penalties and a drop goal
to give the winners a 23-3 lead at the breather.
On resumption CR and FC scored three more tries as No. 8 Dushanth
Lewke once again pierced the CH and FC defence while full-back Mohamed
Sherif and winger Nishan de Silva scored one try each in the second half
with Dev Anand and Sentil Kumar making the conversions.
This was CR and FC’s fifth successive win for the season having
earlier overcome Air Force (29-3), Police (25-16), Army (46-21) and Old
Zahirians (85-3). CR and FC will confront their traditional rivals
Havelock Sports Club on June 7 (Saturday) at Longden Place in their next
match.
