A dream becomes a reality

Welcome to school... This seems to be what Head Girl of
Mahamaya College, Kandy, Anilya Amarasekera seems to be
telling their distinguished old girl Thilini Jayasinghe as
she garlands her on arrival at the school for the
felicitation ceremony accorded to Thilini on the occasion of
her being picked to represent Sri Lanka in badminton at the
Beijing Olympic Games. Thilini Jayasinghe is the first Sri
Lankan girl to play badminton at the Olympics. The first Sri
Lankan boy to play in badminton tournament at the Olympics
was Niroshan Wijesekera at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Asoka Dissanayake are on the right along with the other
members of the staff.

It was a dream when she started playing competitive badminton - to
play at the Olympic Games some day. That dream has come true and
Mahamaya old girl Thilini Jayasinghe is all set and ready to play at the
Beijing Olympic Games.
In any sport the participants need the support of those in charge and
Thilini Jayasinghe is ever grateful to her parents, the Principal of
Mahamaya Indrani Withanachchi, the staff and fellow students and Sports
Minister Gamini Lokuge for all the encouragement given to her to further
her interest in badminton which has resulted in her being picked to
represent the country at the Olympic Games. |
