Sunday Observer Teen n’ Twenty Youth Club:
What makes everyday worth living?
by Charmaine Fernando
Hi! How’s life treating you
beautiful girls and handsome guys from all four corners of amazing Sri
Lanka? Are you feeling happy or are you down and out? Look it’s up to
you to make your own happiness. Happiness is just a state of your mind.
If you choose to be happy do something about it.
Now, to do something about making yourself happy, you have to go out
of your way to do something wonderful for somebody else. You don’t have
to eradicate hunger in Ethiopia or go further to rid third-world hunger
by inventing a pill of sorts, just to feel good inside you. Simple
things are the ones that bring on happiness. Just give it a thought.
When we go on the road, if we find an old man or woman or children
waiting to cross the road, stop the vehicle, if you were driving or
riding and let them move across carefully, even if you had an urgent
task to attend. Be concerned.
If you travel by bus get up with respect and offer your seat to an
older person who finds it difficult to keep standing or share your seat
with a child. These are things that make your day worth living. These
make us feel good. The feeling that we have done some thing willingly,
however small, make us feel good and happy inside.
Make a habit to do a good thing. Practise it several times a day.
Don’t regret giving away your lunch packet to a beggar or buying a bag
of grocery once in a while, for the poor woman who lives in a hut doen
your road.
To be able to feel for another and do something about it, is a
special blessing you can develop through practice.
Giving will always bring on happiness, more than getting. If you
develop enough generosity to share what you get, then again the
happiness is doubled. This is the law of nature.
You don’t have to expect anything for what you give. Then you bring
on sadness in case the reciever doesn’t show gratitude. Don’t expect
anything at all. Just give whatever you can spare. Share whatever you
can share. The secret of happiness is nothing else.
You don’t need skin whiteners or make-up to make you look good. Your
goodness will show, anyhow. Your smile, your eyes, are the mirror of
your soul. What you are inside, shows on your face. Your eyes will
sparkle with goodness and your face will light up everytime you smile.
Being good is never a ‘weakness’. In fact it’s your strength.
You too may have problems sometimes. But in this life nothing is
permanent. So look out optimistically for great times ahead. Don’t pity
yourself.
Try looking around for what you can do for others. You will forget
all your problems. You are young and have the flexibility to shape up
the way you want.
In other words shaping our destiny is in your own hands. Do positive
things and you will get positive results. So, bring on the smiles!
Look out for our get-together, which will take a few weeks. Till then
do write in requesting for Youth Club membership if you are over 18
years and around twenty five. We already have over two hundred and fifty
members. Remember to send in your clear photo in JPEG, for publication,
OK?
Bye for now n do take care!
