Moving at the Movida
by Nilma Dole
It was definitely a dream come
true to witness a happening nightspot where many celebrities throng but
all at a cost. Imagine rubbing shoulders with the best of the best
celebrities who live or happen to be in London?
There’s no other place to be than the Mover and Shaker of all London
nightspots - Movida! Tipped as the place to be on a nightout, the Movida
located 8-9 Argyll Street in the Soho district of London is stringent on
its motto as being exclusive. Obviously, with party ravers like super
model Kate Moss, singer Rihanna and rich heiress Paris Hilton, who
wouldn’t want to control the security at this nightclub? Also, the only
way to get in is to be a member or join a member’s party.
The severe exclusivity of Movida is probably why much of its huge
popularity among the partygoers in London is massive as everyone wants a
chance to see what makes the Movida nightclub the classically sumptuous
nightclub that it is known to be.
Is any indication of what to expect when you set foot into the
exquisite nightclub. With an exclusive restaurant area dishing out the
finest tastes in the UK, there is plenty to munch and crunch on before
hitting the dance floor. One thing that the Movida is known for is its
attitude however, so unless you go out to party till you drop and go
gosh on your dosh (spend plenty of money), you may not feel very
comfortable once inside the doors.
Graciously letting the Sunday Observer enter free when they witnessed
Movida for the first time, the sweet PR lady, Krista Spampinato-Tabone
said that usually they have a house full even on weekday nights! She
said, “Movida is London’s foremost celebrity hang out and often we see
many of the most popular faces frequenting here”.
So even though many of our readers will go ga-ga like Lady GaGa if
they find out that an entry ticket to Movida is expensive, believe me,
it’s worth the visit if you want to sweet talk a celebrity into marrying
you (just kidding)!
Dushyanth - MJ’s eternal fan
by Mahes Perera
 Michael Jackson’s million seller
hit Thriller received a twist in its choreography when our Dushyanth
Weeraman and his group D Star Regiment danced an original and
interesting adaptation of the song recently. This was at the successful
show Hair X presented by Oriflame. The audience had a pleasant surprise
when the monsters of Thriller had a different image what with funky
coloured cocks comb hairstyles! Speaking with Dushyanth after the show
he revealed that “the idea originated from the designer Andre Stafan and
I enjoyed choreographing it and dancing the routine.”
Dushyanth and D Star Regiment have been in existence for the past one
and a half years and they have their own show Karaliya packed with 30
songs of which 14 songs are sinhala original ones and 16 of them are
Michael Jackson hits. “We have at least one show every week and also
perform mostly at celebrity weddings. In fact soon we will be performing
at Lasith Malinga’s wedding.
Our schedule is getting crowded now and I’m hoping to tour first in
Sri Lanka performing at Kandy, Galle and at towns that are youth
populated and then I want to go abroad to perform at the States, Europe,
England, India, Dubai where there is a large Sri Lankan population.
Dushyanth who learnt his dancing from Anushan Perera concentrated on
Latin dancing and free style. But his dance groove has always been
Michael Jackson. Why did you choose the name D Star Regiment?
”I’m quite fond of the military and in my group we have a military
system - the seniors and juniors who have to work to a tight rule
schedule. I have my own school at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort
at Professor Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha. I have 65 students in my class
their ages ranging from 6 to 30 years. There is no age group.
I want to
teach them dancing creating my own steps. All this happens on Sundays at
3 p.m. From 3 - 4 p.m. I teach the students the basics, and impart to
them the way to move their body to the rhythm. Then from 4.30 - 6 p.m.
we go over the routines we did or create new movements. Those who like
to join are welcome.”
Will in another ten years from now the music of your idol Michael
Jackson be popular as it is today?
”Yes definitely. Michael Jackson is bigger than the others. Yes his
music will be there like Elvis Presley’s and I will continue to be a fan
of his.”
The sincerity of his answer is my cue to part company and I do so
wishing him all success in his endeavours to keep the music of Michael
Jackson alive with not only the youth but also with the adult music
lovers. |
