Jaffna’s judicial system to be revived
Minister of Justice and Law Reforms Milinda Moragoda has taken the
initiative for a complete revival of the judicial system in the Jaffna
peninsula. Minister Moragoda, accompanied by Ministry officials, paid a
visit to the Appeal and District Court premises in Jaffna last Friday,
where he met judges, officials and lawyers. At present District Courts
and Magistrate’s Courts are functioning in Mallakam, Pt. Pedro, Kayts,
Jaffna and Chavakachcheri in the Jaffna District while there are
District and Magistrate’s Courts in the Vavuniya District. No law courts
are functioning in Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts at the moment.
However, a new High Court will be set up in Kilinochchi once the
recommendations of the Judicial Delimitation Commission are implemented
early next year. New District Courts will also be set up in Kilinochchi
and Mullaitivu while a Circuit Court will be set up in Velanai.
