TENNIS: Royal College won the National School Games for the 2nd consecutive year with a magnificent display of tennis at the National Tennis Centre last month. After the unexpected performance where they did not live up to expectations at the Public Schools Tennis Tournament in June, this win indicates that the Royalists are back on top of the school tennis arena.

Being the top seeds, the Royalists had little trouble in reaching the final. They defeated De Mazenod College 2-0, St.Patricks College, Jaffna 2-0 and in the semi-finals beat St.Michael's College, Batticaloa 2-0.

In the much anticipated final the Royalists put up a fine show against a very strong St.Peter's College team to defeat them 2-1.

The hallmark of the final may be considered as the sportsmanship displayed by St.Peter's College which should be a role model for other schools. The Royalists have learnt from their mistakes and this win was possible because of the effort put in by all the games masters, the players. Furthermore the intensive beginners and the mini tennis programmes conducted by Mr. Ganedran Subramanium the coach at Royal College are expected to yield results in the following years.

Even at present the overall - coach of Royal College, Ganendran Subramaniam who has represented Junior Wimbledon, Davis Cup and was a National Doubles Champion, is a product of Royal College. The current national champion Harshana Godamana, Senior Davis Cup player, Rajive Rajapakse, former Davis Cup Captain, Arjun Fernando can be considered as the golden products of this prestigious school. The current captain Indika Wettasinghe and vice captain Shehan Gomesz have also represented the country on a number of occasions while 13 year-old Sharmal Dissanayake has already made a fine impact in the national and International arena.

The Royal College team consisted of captain - Indika Wettasinghe, Vice Captain- Shehan Gomesz, Kushan Weerakkody, Mohamed Shaarkit, Anujan Subramanium and Shan De Silva with the teacher in-charge Mrs. I. Hamangoda.
