Flash Fiction!
Perera-Hussein believes in
pushing the envelope when it comes to inspiring and spearheading Sri
Lankan fiction. This is one such effort. Do you write? Do you have
stories buzzing in your head? Are you good at saying a lot with a
little? PH plans on publishing our first ever Flash Fiction collection
in English and you can be a part of it.
Whether you’re an aspiring or established writer, this opportunity is
open to anyone and everyone. The 100 best stories will make it to this
ground-breaking publication! FLASH WHAT? In a nutshell, this is fiction
of extreme brevity. This isn’t just a short story but a very, very short
story. It is also referred to by various other names such as short-short
stories, sudden, postcard, as well as minute, fast, quick and
micro-fiction.
There is no widely accepted definition when it comes to length but it
varies from as low as 25 to as many as 750 words. The challenge of flash
Fiction is to tell a complete story in which every word is essential, to
peel away the decorative but redundant adverbs and fluff until you’re
left with nothing but the core of a good story. This story can be plot
driven or character driven; its narrative style can be anything from
postmodern, to classic realist to a good old pot-boiler.
Anything goes, as long as there’s a theme, plot, characters, and
narrative development in it. It may seem like a lot to pack into less
than three to four sentences but in Flash Fiction it is NOT necessary
that everything is spelt out. Implication and metaphor can go a long
way.
What we DON’T want to read are smart catchphrases and witty albeit
superfluous one-liners. We are an SMS generation, living in the era of
Twitter; therefore this should be a piece of cake! So be creative. Be
experimental. Be original. And while you’re at it have fun!
