The great Georges Hobeika
With a celebrity client list
including Hilary Swank, Diane Kruger, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez and
Rihanna, Georges Hobeika is a renowned name in fashion that will give
new meaning to the word ‘couture’. This is the art of handmade garments
which is tailor-made for the discerning and deserving.
The world of high-class fashion will be opened to Asia through Sri
Lanka for the first time when Georges Hobeika introduces his prestigious
couture label to Asia from Colombo on October 27 during a special
charity event. All proceeds from the event will benefit First Lady Madam
Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa’s cancer charity Carlron Suwa Sevana.
Celebrating the female form, Georges Hobeika has delved into aspects
of fine fashion design for over 20 years. The son of a seamstress,
Georges Hobeika discovered his passion for fashion and clothes when he
fulfilled his mother’s requests to help her with her tailoring trade.
With a flair for fashion design, he even studied civil engineering to
improve his sketches and drawings in a more realistic manner. He
completed his knowledge with Architectural Art and Design. It turns out
that he simply generously wanted to help his mom in facing her excessive
sewing projects, by sketching the dresses which were to become what she
had to sew.
Which means that she relied on him, and which also means that he
showed to be skilled at sketching dresses, since this to-be Fashion
Designer ended up doing his own sketching collections to be sent to the
market, later on.
It was Georges Hobeika’s creativity, design and embroidering talent
which was the key to his success and made his designs hot favourites
when clients came to his mother’s tailoring shop. In 1994, he ventured
to Paris and pursued internships at renowned fashion houses to take his
passion higher and give the world a taste of his style.
Harnessing his fashion passion, he found the world’s catwalks as the
perfect place to channel his fashion desires.
Shortly after, he returned home to open his own atelier in Beirut and
continues to support his mother’s work by fully integrating his
clientele with hers. Proud of his unique beginnings, Georges Hobeika is
happy to see what started out as a small family business becoming a
thriving fashion house.
Popular fashion designer who has dressed Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock
and Dame Julie Andrews and Dinesh Chandrasena will host the show. He is
in charge of business development - Asia region for Georges. The show
will see Georges’ favourite pieces from his past collections and his
Fall-Winter 2010/11 MASAI collection, which was shown at the Louvre
Museum in Paris taking the Sri Lankan ramp.
