Bakers want control on bread prices
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association (ACBOA) yesterday said the
different prices charged on a 450g loaf of bread by bakery and boutique
owners, hoteliers and supermarkets should be monitored by authorities to
protect consumers.
It is reported that bread is currently sold by boutique owners at
different prices ranging from Rs. 38 to Rs. 50 and according to the
recent price increase it will further go up unless is taken action in
this regard. Speaking on the price increase, ACBOA, Chairman N.K.
Jayawardena said when a 450g loaf of bread was sold at Rs. 42 many
bakery owners were in the habit of making various types of bread and
sell them beyond the controlled price and unfortunately authorities paid
no attention towards these irregularities.
He, therefore urged the Government to introduce a standard price for
a loaf of bread like they have introduced a standard weight.
