Massive water supply project for Jaffna
by Ananth Palakidnar
A massive water supply project for the Jaffna peninsula from the
Iranaimadu tank in Kilinochchi was launched by Water Supply and Drainage
Minister Dinesh Gunawardene on Friday, following a directive from
President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Minister Gunawardene said the
Iranaimadu-Jaffna water supply project was a remarkable task as far as
water for the Jaffna peninsula was concerned.
Earlier, plans to provide water from the mega Iranaimadu tank to the
Jaffna peninsula failed due to the conflict in the North.
The Minister also opened an office in Jaffna on Friday to administer
the Iranaimadu-Jaffna water supply project in the presence of Ministers
Douglas Devananda and Dew Gunasekera. Minister Gunawardene said that the
water from the Iranaimadu tank to the Jaffna peninsula would help solve
the water shortage for drinking and agricultural purposes in the
Vadamarachchi and islets in the peninsula. |
