Royal beat S. Thomas' at 37th Rowing Regatta

Royal oarsmen gave a vigourous display to secure the overall championship with 34 points to 18 to regain the T.N. Fernando Memorial Trophy, after a lapse of two years, but was not powerful enough to win the all important boat race, at the 37th Annual Royal-Thomian Regatta at the Beira Lake waters yesterday.

Royal has won the overall championship for the fourteenth occasion while the Thomians lead with 18 wins and five ties.

The Thomians have won the Boat Race on 22 occasions to Royal’s 19.

It was smooth rowing for Royal when they won five races to the Thomians one in the first half of the championships.

Thomian Sajeev de Silva won the Senior sculls beating Royal’s Shehan Muthugala creating a new record in the 37 year old history of the regatta with a timing of 3.3 seconds, the previous record being 3.35. Royal created a new record in the C Fours with a timing of 3.11m erasing the previous 3.15.

When the boat race began as usual in semi darkness the Royalist were leading 34-6. But the Thomians came back with a vengeance to win the race with a timing of 3.07 min.to Royal’s 3.11 min.

B sculls: Chirath Karunanayake (Royal) beat Shelan de Livera. (STC).

A sculls: Sajeev de Silva (STC) beat Shehan Muthugala (RC).

B double sculls: Shehan Muthugala and Sahyan Warnasuriya (RC) beat Shelan de Livera and Chamal Jayanetti (STC)

A double sculls: Jehan Samarasekera and Chirath Karunanayake (Royal) beat Sajeev de Silva and Sajin de Livera (STC).

B pairs: Sanjiva Jayasuriya and Sahan warnasuriya (RC) beat Shaveendra Gunatileka and Akshat Wickremanayake (STC).

A pairs: Pradeep Maddumabandara and Rdhika Weerasekera (RC) beat Sajin de Livers and Sajeev de Silva (STC).

C Fours: Supun Abeywardena (B), Sanjiv Jaysuriya (2), Sahan Warnasuriya (3), Ishan Perera (2), Mevan Jayatileka (Cox) (Royal) beat Milan Joseph (B), Ramith Nanayakara (2), Shavindra Guinatileka (3) Aksaht Lathif (Cox) Wickremanayake (S).

B Fours: Pasan Ranaweera (Cox), Pradeep Maddumabandara (S), Radika Weerasekera (3), Sithija Gamage (2), Akila Keerthiratne (B) beat Amric Varia (C), Trehan Manatunga (B), Zidney Fazal (2), Uween Jayasinghe (3), Yohan Wijeratne (S) S. Thomas’.
