Ladies College beat Visakha 5-2 in waterpolo
By Jihan Riza
Ladies College beat Visakha Vidyalaya by five goals to two in their
7th annual waterpolo encounter worked off at Police Sports Club swimming
pool complex, Colombo. Though the final score does not give any
indication of the close battle for supremacy, it was a keenly contested
tussle. Both teams were in fine form but the Ladies College offence
proved to be too much for the Visakhian defense and jumped into a quick
2-0 lead.

The Visakhian offence too was strong but it was not easy trying to
get through the Ladies College goalie Sachini Rajanayake who foiled all
Visakhian attempts at goal in the first half. Sachini, who has
represented Sri Lanka at International waterpolo tournaments, controlled
the pace of the game from the start and ensured that Ladies College
emerged victorious. The ‘goal of the match’ was undoubtedly the second
goal scored by Rebekha Pieris of Ladies College, following a pass from
Shemani Ratwatte. The ball shot four metres away from the goal, rocketed
through the Visakhian defense to meet the back of the net.
At the final whistle, Ladies College reigned triumphant with their
5-2 win over Visakha Vidyalaya with Dharitri Amarasekara scoring two
goals while Rebekha Pieris, Sabreena Lahie and Dinushki de Livera scored
a goal each.
The scoring for Visakha Vidyalaya was done by Yoshini Liyanage and
Aneka Abeywickrama scoring a goal each. Nevertheless, Ladies College,
led by Enakshi Wickramanayake, proved formidable opponents for Visakha
Vidyalaya to dish out some fast and open waterpolo.
However, Visakha Vidyalaya had the consolation of winning the junior
title, beating their opponents Ladies College with a handsome margin of
nine goals to two in the Under-15 encounter.
The Visakhians jumped into a quick two-goal lead within the first 45
seconds of the match and kept at it with Akshana Perera scoring three
goals while Iimashi Kosgodage, Aneka Abeywickrama and Shivani
Gunewardane each scoring two goals each to seal an easy win for the
blues.
It was a poor performance by Ladies College juniors who could not
meet the challenge posed by Visakha team. Both goals for Ladies College
were scored by Chantal Hatch, who made a lone effort. |
