Jaffna pre-school teachers express gratitude: Jaffna is the only district in Sri Lanka where pre-school teachers are paid a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000. Over 1,000 teachers gathered at the Weerasingham Hall, Jaffna yesterday to express their gratitude to the government. The Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association with Vishakha Girl Guides, Interact Club of Wycherley International School, Siyasaviya Foundation and Apksha Foundation had organised two free health camps for Bhikkus recently under the guidance of Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thera to mark 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi. Aground 500 Bhikkus of the Colombo Bhikku Bala Mandalaya participated in the health camp held at Poorwarama Temple, Kirulapone while another 500 Bhikkus called at the Maharagama Siri Vajiragnana Viharaya. Death of Rev. Fr. Alfred Alexander

Rev. Fr. Alfred Alexander, SSS, of Allaipiddy, Jaffna the First Regional Superior of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation, in Sri Lanka (1987-1995), founder of the Cenacle of the Divine Healer and of the Eymard Youth Centre, Sillalai passed away on June 20 in Melbourne, Australia.

Fr. Alexander was also the first local Blessed Sacramant priest.

His body will lie at St. Philip Neri's Church, Pettah tomorrow from 9.00 a.m. to midnight, Tuesday, July 5, from 6.00 a.m. to midnight on Wednesday, July 6

The funeral mass will be held at 10.00 a.m. followed by burial at the General Cemetery, Kanatte, Borella.


Cardiac patient needs funds for surgery

Ramaiah Sarath (48), of Divithura Estate, Ethkandura has been advised to undergo surgery for Coronery Artery Bypass Grafting, by Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, P.N Rajapaksa of the Lanka Hospitals.

The procedure is estimated to cost around Rs. 460,000 and he seeks the assistance of wellwishers for assistance. Contributions may be remitted to A/C No 073-2-001-0-6338391 of the People's Bank, Elpitiya branch.

 


Help: She needs hip replacement

Mrs. N. S. Osan (47) of 518/8, Daluggala Road, Heiyanthuduwa is suffering from Osteoarthritis of her left hip, thus unable to attend to her day-to-day work due to constant pain.

Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Upali Banagala has advised hip replacement, which could be done at the National Hospital.

As an uncemented total hip cost around Rs. 198,000, she appeal to the generous public for financial assistance, which could be remited to her A/C No. 1-0067-21-0084-3 of the National Savings Bank, Kiribathgoda.

Talks on academics salary anomalies under way

The Higher Education Ministry had called upon the Treasury to correct the salary anomalies of university teachers, said Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne.He said discussions are being held with the Treasury in this regard.

The Federation of University Teachers Association had demanded a salary hike two months ago.


IET Sri Lanka celebrates 140th anniversary

This year marks the 140th anniversary of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) the successor to the Society of Telegraph Engineers founded on May 17, 1871 in London.

The IET has evolved into a worldwide network over 150,000 engineers and technologists in 127 countries with Sri Lanka having over 900 members.

The Sri Lanka Network of the IET plays a prominent role in the advancement of its members through presentations, study tours and awareness programs to contribute towards the country's rapid development. Coincidentally it was on May 17, that the International Convention was signed in 1865 in Paris which created the International Telegraph Union which later became the International Telecommunication Union in 1934. May 17 is commemorated worldwide as the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day.

The Sri Lanka Centre of the IET will commemorate the 140th anniversary with a symposium on Evolution of Information Exchange at the Galadari Hotel on July 22.


Book presentation

The Sinhala translation by Prof. Piyadasa Ranasinghe of the Dept. of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya of the book "The Theory and Practice of the Dewey Decimal Classification by Indian expert, Prof. M. Satheeja, will be presented to Prof. Jayasiri Lankage, a pioneer in Library Science Education, at a ceremony to be held at the National Library Auditorium, tomorrow, July 4 at 3.00 p.m.
