Lankans suffer third defeat

RUGBY: Sri Lanka crashed to their third successive defeat while going down to Thailand 39-51 in their 2011 Junior Rugby Asiad match worked off in Hong Kong yesterday.

Sri Lanka who had earlier lost to the defending champions Japan and the hosts Hong Kong once again failed to make an impact and were trailing 22-41 at half time.

 



 


Inter-University VB tourney July 8 to 10 in Matara

Volleyball: The 11th Inter-University Volleyball Championships will be held from July 8 to 10 at the Indoor Stadium of University of Ruhuna in Matara. The Department of Physical Studies of the University of Ruhuna is organising this year's championships.

There will be 52 teams from the universities of Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Sri Jayawardenapura, Moratuwa, Jaffna, Rajarata, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, Wayamba, South Eastern, Aesthetics, Uva and Ruhuna, There will be the men's tourney and the women's tourney too. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna professor Sirith Mendis will declare open the tournament at 8 a.m. on July 8.

Last year, the University of Ruhuna won the men's tournament while the University of Kelaniya were the championships in the women's section.


Dinesh on SLBC tomorrow

Dinesh Weerawansa will be interviewed as the guest media personality on SLBC's Sinhala Commercial Service, Kreeda Sangrahaya (Sports Edition) program tomorrow at 5 p.m. It will be broadcast on FM 93.3 (Colombo) and 106.9 (Islandwide).


Former Royal cricketer passes away

Former Royal College Cricketer, "Harish Amarasekera", passed away peacefully after a brief illness in Melbourne at the age of 44, on Saturday (Yesterday).

Harish was a good cricketer and a fine athlete. He played under the captaincy of Sandesh Algama and Heshan de Silva. As soon as he played for the Big match in 1985, he migrated to Australia.

He was a member of the 4x100 relay team which holds the school record up to now, comprising Nadeeja Jayaratne, Janaka Lenaduwa and Ramil Mohammad.

During his life in Australia, he was an active member in the Old Boys Royal Thomian Big matches. Apart from his sporting abilities, he was a loving husband to Sharon and a loving father to his three children. Not to forget the fact, that he was a good friend to many people.

He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

His funeral will take place on Tuesday July 5, 2011 in Melbourne.
