Trinity College, Kandy registered their seventh outright win for the
season by defeating Mahinda College, Galle by an innings and 132 runs in
their schools under 19 cricket tournament match played at the Asgiriya
Stadium, Kandy yesterday. The match was over shortly after lunch on the
second day.
This match was a personal success to skipper and opener Niroshan
Dickwella who stroked a brilliant 212 which was also the first double
hundred to be scored in a school match in the hill capital this year. He
hit 25 fours and 1 six in an innings which lasted 158 balls. He reached
his hundred in 80 balls and 200 in 150 balls.
Niroshan Dickwella was associated in a third wicket stand of 109 with
Heshan Wanniarachchi who made 44.
The Trinitians after batting little over an hour yesterday morning
declared at 332 for 4 wickets in 55.3 overs. The scoring rate was around
6 runs per over.
Mahindians who made 130 in their first innings were set a herculean
task of making 202 runs to avoid an innings defeat or bat for 85 overs
to force a draw.
This task was just beyond them and they were dismissed for a paltry
61 in just 19.3 overs. They would have out for a much lower score when
they were 39 for 9 before Chalana de Silva entertained the crowd with
lusty hitting in making 38 not out.
The Mahindians started on a distress note losing their first five
wickets for 14 and later were 27 for 8 reaching a point of no return.
Left arm medium pacer Amrith Srimohan returned the impressive figures
of 7 for 23 giving him a match haul of 9 for 48.Niroshan Dickwella's
knock of 212 is the second highest at the Asgiriya rest only to Sachith
Pathirana's 221 against Sri Rahula College, Katugastota about 8 years
ago.
