UNP ‘resurrects’ Tiger flag

Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said the Tiger flag which had fallen at the Nandikadal lagoon on May 19, 2009 was again hoisted at the joint TNA-UNP rally led by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in Jaffna on May 1.

It is very unfortunate that Wickremesinghe, willingly or unwillingly acts to cater to the interests of the pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora. A political leader should not resort to this kind of myopic acts, the Minister told the Sunday Observer.

He said the country’s national agenda should not be distorted on the basis of grabbing power.

The country’s national agenda should be the utmost priority and it should be completely different from party politics.

However, the pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora may be very happy over the decision to hoist the Tiger flag in Jaffna.

Everybody should unite irrespective of political differences to further safeguard the victories achieved against terrorism. The significant victories gained by the country can only be safeguarded by promoting national harmony. May 19, 2009, the day on which LTTE terrorism was eradicated should not be used as the day to promote hatred among communities. This is the day where everybody should be determined to build a “modern Sri Lanka”, the Minister said.
