Govt ready to face elections -President
The Government is ready to face elections as it
enjoys the fullest confidence of the people throughout the island,
President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday. Addressing a series of
rallies held to mark the commencement of the re-organisation
campaign of the SLFP from the Anuradhapura District, President
Rajapaksa pointed out that it was the Opposition which was
apprehensive of facing elections at any level.

Public support vital to control dengue mosquitoes
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that
dengue mosquitoes cannot be controlled by appointing only a task
force or using chemicals. The support of social service
organisations, the public and schoolchildren are vital to destroy
dengue breeding grounds. Minister Sirisena will launch the `Dengue
Control Week’ tomorrow.

No aircraft fuel without quality certificate
No fuel will be issued to aircraft without a
quality assurance certificate, said Petroleum Industries Minister
Susil Premajayantha. The laboratory tests conducted by the Ceylon
Petroleum Corporation (CPC) had revealed that 7,500 MT of the 20,000
MT received on April 27, 2012 were not up to standard.

UNP ‘resurrects’ Tiger flag
Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister
Dullas Alahapperuma said the Tiger flag which had fallen at the
Nandikadal lagoon on May 19, 2009 was again hoisted at the joint
TNA-UNP rally led by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in
Jaffna on May 1. It is very unfortunate that Wickremesinghe,
willingly or unwillingly acts to cater to the interests of the
pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora.

LTTE’s US head sentenced to time served
The former head of the LTTE in the US who had
pleaded guilty to providing material support to the group, was
sentenced to the time served of five years on Friday. Karunakaran
Kandasamy, 55, was among the four persons who had pleaded guilty in
2009 to purchasing improvised explosive devices, missiles and
machine guns and raising millions of dollars for the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
