Death toll rises to 27:
High-powered committee to probe Welikada Prison violence
The Government yesterday appointed a
three-member high-powered committee to probe the violence at the
Welikada Prison which led to the death of 27 inmates on Friday
evening. The police deployed a special CID team to probe the
incident, which also left several police personnel injured.

elite Forces ended in a deadly riot where many prisoners were
killed. A shootout broke out between the prisoners and the STF,
Prisoners went on the rampage defying orders by the STF to declare
hidden mobile telephones and drugs.

Friend turns killer to rob gold
The abduction and disappearance of a gold broker
from Sea Street of Colombo 14 last Saturday sent shock waves among
the wealthy merchants in the area. Most of them were under the
impression that a group of people who had arrived in a van whisked
him away to a secret location where he is being kept in solitary
confinement to extort ransom money from his family.
