Mayan apocalypse: 25-year food survival packs for sale
On December 21, the day the Mayan calendar ends and the belief is
that it will mark the end of the world.
But there is panic buying at Emergency Food Storage, which sells
frozen dried food and survival equipment and Britishers are visiting the
warehouse in fear of the worst, says the owner James Blake.
For his customers who believe that there will be an apocalypse in a
couple of weeks time, James Blake says that he recommends that they buy
food packs that can last up to 25 years.
Inside the food pack is freeze-dried "chicken korma, chilli,
lasagna," James Blake says, adding, "there is a wide variety of food out
there and it's tasty food as well."
A possible end of the world predicted by the Mayan calendar has
prompted UK customers to buy 'food survival packs' for up to 25 years.
Ahead of December 21, which marks the conclusion of the 5,125-year "Long
Count" Mayan calendar, panic buying of food and candles has swept
through China and Russia also as the fear spreads that the date will
mark some form of apocalypse.
American has world's best beard
"Full beard with styled moustache", is the category which gave Burke
Kenny the first place in the 2011 World Beard and Moustache Championship
in Trondheim, Norway.
This is the second time he won this category which he won earlier in
England four years ago, where he also became the youngest international
facial-hair champion.
"I don't take it extremely seriously," 26-year-old Kenny said adding
"I like to be an honourable gentleman and present myself honourably."
Kenny began growing his winning beard and mustache combo when he was
about 20 while attending Evergreen State College and his biggest facial
hair influence was his father.
"My dad is definitely my No. 1 inspiration," Kenny said. "He's had a
moustache for 30 years."
Kenny is one of six Beard Team USA members to take home gold medals
from this year's championship, four of whom are from Washington state.
The gold medallist says he uses his facial hair to promote,
understand and acceptance for big beard wears.
"I encourage men to grow quality facial hair, if they can," Kenny
said. "And wear it humbly.
'Head in bin man'

Aberdeen Street |
It was a very unfortunate incident for homeless William Middleton,
when he got his head stuck in a trash can on a busy street in Aberdeen,
Scotland, after trying to retrieve his hat which had fallen into the
bin.
Now he has been dubbed "head in bin man" in the UK after a photo of
him and the trash bin was published in British newspapers.
Firefighters rescued Middleton but the nickname "bucket heid" (that's
"bucket head" for non-Scots) got stuck to him.
"I couldn't get my head out. It was shocking. It was stinking. I'm
now known as bucket heid," he told reporters. After firefighters cut
Middleton free with the help of a high-powered saw, he was taken to the
hospital for a check up.
Middleton is a cigarette scavenger, and a familiar sight on
Aberdeen's streets.
The newspapers said he lost his hat while looking to see if there
were any cigarettes in the trash can.
Homeless charities in Aberdeen have condemned those who have poked
fun at Middleton, noting the desperation of people living on the
streets. |
