FLASHBACK: It is true that strange things happen in cricket and this
innings and 119 runs win by Pakistan over India can well fall into the
classification of strange things.

Javed Miandad – hit a splendid knock of 280 not out and
helped Pakistan to make 581 for three wickets at which score
the declaration was made. With Mudassar Nazar was involved
in world record partnership of 451 for the third wicket. |

Mudassar Nazar – was in fine form with the bat and made a
splendid knock of 231. Together with Miandad had a glorious
partnership of 451 runs for the third-wicket a world record
partnership that equalled the stand of Bradman and Ponsord
of Australia. |
Pakistan won the first three Tests comfortably - the first by an
innings, the second by 10 wickets and then again by an innings would
almost certainly have been certified.
The series has proved unbelievably one-sided that the outcome has
come a sort of anti-climax. If there is any sort of jubilation, it is
nothing like the ecstatic joyfulness that overcomes the two countries
whenever one of the other wins something particularly against each
other. The Hyderabad Test match only confirmed beyond any further doubt
that the margin of difference between the two teams is very wide indeed.
Pakistan won by an innings and 119 runs and time to spare. This is an
overwhelming win and India were simply run over. The first observation
that comes to mind is that whereas Pakistan are a well-knit team,
"get-up-and-go" combination, India are not so. There are other
differences between the two teams, Imran Khan for instance, but for the
time being, this is enough to separate them.
Few individuals
Whatever fight or resistance India has put up has come from a few
individuals. There has been nothing even remotely resembling a team
fight back.

Dilip Vengsarkar made 58 not out in India’s second innings
score of 273. |
When the Hyderabad Test match started, it was being said that the
toss would make the difference. Admittedly it was a good toss to win but
it was not decisive as was widely imagined. The respective scores are
ample testimony of this. Pakistan amassed 581 for 3 wickets. India in
reply could only muster 189. Note that there had been no deterioration
in the wicket. The playing conditions, if anything, had improved. With
the wicket still playing as well as it did on the first day, India once
again slumped when they followed-on and were bowled out for 273. In both
innings, India crashed to Pakistan's fast bowlers (Imran Khan had a
tally of 8 wickets and Sarfraz 7).
Pakistan - good batting side
What has been happening in the series so far is that the Pakistan
batting has been coming off. There are two reasons for this. The more
obvious is that Pakistan are a very good batting side and their main
batsmen were all in boom. It is bad enough that India have to contend
with Zaheer Abbas but he alone is not their scourge. Others are among
the runs - Miandad was in tremendous form in Hyderabad making 280 and
another double century came off the bat of Mudassar Nazar (231), then
earlier at Faisalabad there were four centurions.
At Hyderabad Mudassar and Miandad equalled the world record for any
partnership, thus linking arms with Bradman and Ponsford. It would have
been bad enough had the Indians only contend with Pakistan's batting
powerhouse. They are having to do with an attack that is their and below
Test standards. Only Kapil Dev of the bowlers belongs in this grade of
cricket. The other appear to be friendly up and downers. They are hard
working but is not good enough in Test cricket.
At Hyderabad, it was tremendous batting by Pakistan and another inept
and spineless batting display by India, who almost certainly appear not
to have any clues facing Imran Khan or Sarfraz Nawaz. There were few
questions raised about the umpiring but they were doused. The margin of
defeats have been so decisive that to blame umpiring for them would be
both unconvincing and churlish. As the Indian skipper has said that
Pakistan had outplayed India in every single department of the game.
