Spices are Sweet
The short novel titled Spices are Sweet by DD, an emerging
storyteller, is a masterly work about a girl who is modern in all her
approaches to life but bound by the cultural and traditional beliefs of
an extended Indian orthodox Hindu family. After an arranged marriage she
goes through shocking encounters with strange young men who come to her
house for ‘bridge viewing'.
Her repeated rejection in the ‘marriage market’ and her parents’
belief in soothsayers, her trauma and her ultimate triumph as an
extraordinary woman are all delicately interwoven into the story proving
that DD is a fine storyteller. The anonymous author has intricately
woven into the story the multifarious aspects of Hindu cultural
traditions in relation to festivals, marriages and other important
functions, giving an indepth knowledge of the customs to non-Hindus and
the Hindus who are ignorant about them.
It is a compelling novel with many interesting events delicately and
artfully presented. The book printed in India is available at books.lk. |
