Big onion seed production, a success

The big onion seed production program launched in the Matale district by the Agriculture Department has been successful.

With the participation of 1,000 farmers in the district, around 100,000 kilograms of vernalised union bulbs, have been cultivated targeting 10,000 kilograms of onion seeds.

The program, has now been extended to Galewela, Dambulla, Pallepola, Naula and Laggala Divisional Secretariat areas.

The Agriculture Department has introduced the tunnel system to protect big onion seed cultivations from the rain. The Government has allocated Rs. 21 million for this project. A complete tunnel kit costs the government over one lakh of rupees.
