Aussies bow to more professional Windies team
by A.C. de Silva
FLASHBACK: Test Match Cricket: Australia were eclipsed by a better
and disciplined and more professional West Indian team which was
instantly superior in attitude and skills in the Test match in Perth.
The West Indies won by 169 runs.

Big Merv Hughes showed great heart fir a record haul of 13
for the match – getting 5 for 130 in the first innings West
Indian total of 449 and then he took 8 for 87 in the West
Indies second innings total of 349 for 9 wickets declared.
|
The match will long be remembered for an extraordinary transformation
which took place late on the second day and for some thrilling
individual achievements - centuries from Viv Richards, Graeme Wood and
Desmond Haynes, splendid 90s from Gus Logie and Stephen Waugh and an
astonishing bowling performance by big Merve Hughes of Australia who had
wonderful figures of 5 for 130 and 8 for 87 in the two West Indian
innings, but yet had to be on the losing side. Hughes had plenty of work
to do after his Australian mate Geoff Lawson had his left jaw broken by
a wicket delivery from West Indian Curtly Ambrose.
Vivian Richards 146
When the West Indies batted first they had a fine innings of 146 by
Vivian Richards who made his 23rd hundred in his 101st appearance since
1974.
Throughout his knock he alternated between the fantastic and fanciful
and struck 21 fours and three sixes in making 146 runs off 150 balls.
At his arrogant best he played some thunderous drives, cuts and
pulls.
With the assistances of his Antiguan teammate Richie Richardson (66)
and the competent Gus Logie (93) the West Indians reached 449 in 7 hours
and 29 minutes in their first innings.
When the Australians went into bat before the tea interval on the
second day their top order David Boon, Wood and Waugh somewhat picked up
courage and started to play attractively. Boon made 80, Wood 111 and
Stephen Waugh 91 that gave some life into the Australian innings.

Desmond Haynes - a mighty hit to leg during his knock of 100 in the West
Indies second innings score of 349 for 9 wickets declared in
the match against Australia in Perth. |

Viv Richards – the top score of 146 runs in the West Indies
first innings score of 449 in the Test against Australia in
Perth.
|
Boon cut, hooked, pulled and drove in the air and dramatically put
into practice Border's plan of controlled aggression.
It was Waugh who carried the attack to the West Indies and with Wood
added 200 in 201 minutes for the fifth wicket.
It was a starting and thrilling stand which caught the imagination of
the Australian fans. Wood, whose international career was at the
crossroads yet again, finished with 111 with 12 boundaries - his ninth
century in 58 Tests while Waugh again just fell short of his maiden Test
century in his 23rd Test scoring 91 from 142 deliveries with 11 fours
and a daring six over third man.
Aussies fall off
The Australians could not, however maintain the rally and in the
absence of Lawson they were unable to restrict the West Indian scoring
rate.
So after the West Indians had rattled up 449 runs in their first
innings, the Australians were finally were all out for 395 runs.
Came the second innings of the West Indians and there was opener
Haynes on call and he made 100, Hooper made 64, Richardson 48 to put up
the West Indies total to 349 in the second innings.
Curiously, however, Richards was nit satisfied with a lead of 385
when the Windies entered the final day and batted for a further 19
minutes so requiring the Australians to score 404 for the most
improbable victory. Australia were finally all out for 234 runs in their
second innings.
