Ryan Jasinghe, who came from Melbourne Australia, set up a national
record in the men's 200m breastroke event in the National Short Course
Meet, held in Hillwood College swiming pool, Kandy recently. The
21-year-old, who swims in CA Tritons swimming club in Melbourne,
Victoria, clocked 2:23.99 winning gold medal in the 200m breastroke
final erasing the previous record of 2:29.72 of MAH Perera. His father
Neomal Jasinghe, old boy of S Thomas' College Colombo, also held the
200m breastroke Sri Lanka record in way back in late 1970s. Neomal has
represented Sri Lanka in 1990 Asian Games in China. Jasinghe is keen to
promote swimming ties between Sri Lanka and Victorian swimming.
"I also teach swimming in Australia, and I would to potentially
foster a programme to teach swimming to every child in Sri Lanka, so
that they can enjoy swimming as well as feel safe in the water," said
Jasinghe.
"Many of my relations were also proficient in many other sports, and
I would love to continue that strong sporting legacy in my family," he
said. Gold medal in 100m breaststoke in 1:06.67
