PI Pieris passes away
Former All-Ceylon cricketer PI Pieris passed away and unknown to many
his funeral was held yesterday at the general cemetery in Borella.
He was 82.
Pieris also served as the president of the Board of Control for
Cricket in Sri Lanka at a time it was devoid of politics and nepotism.
He famously shared in a century stand with Neil Chanmugam for the
last wicket against the West Indies who had Gary Sobers in 1967 at the
Oval in Colombo.
Pieris also represented the Cambridge University team in England and
was a product of S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia whose team he
captained.
