Swimmers open floodgates at Gateway
Swimmers of Gateway College nudged the sport's administrators and
followers in the country by creating eight new meet records at the
International Schools swimming championship held at the Sugathadasa Pool

In establishing the records Gateway's swimmers won four age group
championship titles.
The swimmers who made it possible for Gateway were Pesath Wijesundara
who was the Under-10 boys champion, Araliya Gunasekara the Under-14
girls champion (meet record), Hiruni de Soyza and Sharon Perera who were
the Over-16 girls joint champions.
Alvin Arulmaran and Stephan Perera excelled by establishing two new
meet records each while Vihanga Perera and Rukshala Wijesingha
established one new meet record each.
Vinuka Fernando, Amrith Perera and Kavindi Sumathiratne were also
among the gold medalists.
Gateway finally ended up as runners up with a total score of 974
points raising their standard further.
The Championship was organised by the Asian International School with
the participation of 21 reputed International Schools from across the
country. Several Gateway swimmers performed exceptionally well over the
year in many national level meets. Among them was Stephan Perera, a key
achiever who won five gold medals at the Junior National Short Course
championship, three golds at the Senior and Junior National Long Course
championship 2015 and a gold in the National School Games 2015.
At the Junior National Short Course championship 2015, Vihanga Perera
and Stephan Perera also won a gold medal each.
At the National Age group championship 2015, Stephan Perera (two
golds), Alvin Arulmaran (two golds), Sharon Perera (one gold) and
Araliya Gunasekara (one gold) performed creditably.
Stephan Perera and Alvin Arulmaran also took home a gold medal each
at the Penthathlon championships.
