The armed forces in the Eastern province have been placed on red alert following the ‘split’ between the Wanni and the Eastern command of the LTTE. Despite the removal of `Colonel’ Karuna from his position as the LTTE special commander of the Batticaloa and Ampara districts, the two areas remain calm and quiet. Karuna has assured there won’t be any threat from his faction to the ceasefire. Polls chief decides NE balloting tomorrow

Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake will meet the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police tomorrow to make a final decision on conducting polls in areas controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the North and the East.

UNP declares State media boycott

It's official. The United National party has formalised its 'boycott' of the State media and will not invite coverage of party activities, in either the print or the electronic media which come under State control. Confirmation to this effect came from senior UNP members, who accused the State media of being biased and failure to maintain impartiality, in their coverage.

Freedom Alliance charges: 'Secret UNP plan for N-E ballot-stuffing'

A secret meeting held at the Prime Minister's official residence, "Temple Trees", last week had discussed the possible political advantages for the UNP of stationing election polling booths in LTTE held areas so that ballot boxes could be stuffed, sources in the rival Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have charged.
