JEC to strengthen Lanka, Pakistan economic cooperation The ninth session of the Sri Lanka Pakistan Joint Economic Commission (JEC) is scheduled to be held on May 12 and 13 at the Ceylon Continental Hotel. The main objective of the JEC is to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries and to explore new areas for cooperation in areas including trade and commerce, investment and joint ventures, credit facilities, Induistries and production, food agriculture and livestock, communication, transport, science and technology, natural resources, culture, sports and tourism, education and technical assistance, water and power and civil aviation. It is expected that the two countries would also exchange diplomatic notes informing each other of the completion of the constitutional and procedural requirements in respect of the Sri Lanka Pakistan FTA to be implemented after 30 days from the exchange of diplomatic notes. The Pakistan delegation will be led by Minister of Commerce Humayun Akhtar Khan while the Sri Lankan delegation will be led by Minister of Trade Commerce and Consumer Affairs Jeyaraj Fernandopulle. Other members of the delegation include representatives from the concerned ministries, government departments and institutions which are involved the areas of cooperation with Pakistan under the JEC. During the visit the Pakistan minister is scheduled to meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lakshman Kadirgamar and Minister of Finance Dr Sarath Amunugama. The eighth session of the JEC was held in Pakistan. |
