Economic benefits from fish by-products The second phase of the study on the by-products from the fish industry conducted by the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) together with the Norwegian Institute of Fishery and Aquaculture Research will get off the ground in the near future. The study was initiated to get greater economic benefits to the country from fish by-products that are wasted and causing an environmental problem, a spokesman for ITI said. The by - products can be used in different industries including food and feed, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic industries. Also the discharge of these byproducts into fishery harbours, the sea and the nearby land gives rise to severe pollution problems and therefore the effective utilisation of these by-products will mitigate the environmental hazard as well. According to a survey carried out before the tsunami Sri Lanka catches about 300,000 tons of fish per year. Of this a part is consumed locally while the balance is exported. In both instances only around 40-60% is consumed while the balance is unutilised, but if processed will bring in foreign exchange to the country. |
