Not just another day... :

It's Mother's Day

Today is Mother's Day. And as hotels around the city concoct special events to out do one another in making the day extra memorable, one can't help wondering why it is necessary to have a special day to commemorate an event that should be a daily occurrence.

Aren't mother's though - infuriating, exasperating, annoying and obstinate, as they sometimes are - special every day of our lives?

Shouldn't we treat them with special care every day? We should. But how many of us do? Often taken for granted, often sidelined in our busy lives, often ignored because they don't fit into our modern convictions, mothers have become people we turn to, only when we are hurt, lonely or need a baby sitter.

Perhaps in the current context, a Mother's Day is essential. Not so much to write how important she is in a Mother's Day card with an apt verse, or to spend half a day at a star class hotel, having her fretting about what Dad is doing at home. But to re-evaluate the mother-daughter relationship and look at things from a new perspective.

Mothers are important people on whatever day - even on Father's Day. And one doesn't need a special day to appreciate everything she's done from the time you were just a clot causing morning sickness, through adolescence to adulthood. She's been there to kiss your worries away when you were a kid, bandage your wounds when you were a little older; lend a shoulder to cry on when the going got tough, prod you forward when the burdens of adulthood made you falter.

She's been there - sometimes with some worldly aphorism, a word of caution, often the voice of experience, the tone of rationality, the sound of reason.... We should consider everyday Mother's Day. But since we don't, let's wish all the mothers of Sri Lanka Happy Mother's Day and hope that starting from today, every mom is appreciated for being a mother.
