A new CD from 6th Lane

by Mahes Perera

"Our music has no limitations", says Hiran Thenuwara, leader of the groovy 6th Lane. "In fact we sing R & B, Hip-Hop, rock, pop and fusion" continues the young and enthusiastic Hiran who is responsible for writing all the songs that they perform.

At the moment there is a lull in their performance dates, since Hiran is at the University at Peradeniya in the throes of attending lectures and working tutorials towards becoming a dental surgeon. However, they did perform at Reach Out 2 in Colombo and Reach Out 3 in Kandy. Last week 6th Lane were featured in a live performance on Sirasa. In their own way this four piece band is putting together music tracks for their new album, in the weekends, and which they will launch with a concert soon.

This new album of theirs will have eight tracks and will be produced by Hiran. The themes are love and reality but different from Nirvanaya', with the rhythms in hip-hop, r & B rock and fusion, and laced with a large serving of rap.

The groups debut album Nirvanaya containing fourteen originals was released on the M. Entertainment label. The director of the album, Hiran is happy that he titled the CD Nirvanaya because according to him "the music was a new approach intended to give a sense of heaven to a true lover of original and imaginative music." The CD found success because it came out at a time when the focus was on youth music talent and creativity and was well received by the young who were waiting for something different to hit their way and Nirvanaya fitted the bill.

Most of the songs were written by Hiran and Ramya Thenuwara, with his band member Chamath Janaka chipping in along with Karunadasa Suriarachchi.

Dedicated and committed in their music 6th Lane is determined to hit the high spots. When they started off they took on the name of 'Uth Max' quite appropriately and were successful in having their song Vassanaya telecast on Swarnavahini's prime time programme Heart Beat.

Another of their songs Mal Peththak was telecast on Sirasa TV. Their song Blue Soul turned out to be a hit track and was aired on Sun FM Hot 40. Other songs that became popular for them were Conflagration and Sacrifice on a lie which stayed on TNL radio's Sri Lankan Top 10 for many weeks. 'Blue Soul' will soon be made into a video, so watch out for 6th Lane's appearance on the popular TV stations.
