'Apple Valley Village' for tsunami victims The Minnesota - Sri Lanka Friendship Foundation of USA with the help of the county mayor of Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA Ms. Mary Hamann - Roland has launched housing project to provide permanent shelter for 50 families hit by the last December tsunami tidal wave. The total housing project will cost over US$ 300,000. The founders of the Minnesota - Sri Lanka Friendship Foundation, Srilal Liyanapathiranage, Mithula Perera and Viran Ratnayake launched a massive fund-raising campaign last January for the construction of this housing project. On a request made by the Apple Valley mayor, this development will be named as 'Apple Valley Village.' The project will also include a pre-school, playground and a library which would be the second stage of this development. The housing construction stands on a beauty-inspiring land given by the Urban Development Authority, in Monrovia Estate - Galle district with the approval of the Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. After completion of the construction, the Foundation is also planning to support this community by introducing various productive programs for a further period of 5 years to rebuild the lives of these innocent victims to face tomorrow with more confidence. |
