Tsunami hit areas : Environmental relief program on way The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has drawn-up a comprehensive post-tsunami Environmental Rehabilitation Program to remedy the extensive damage caused to the environment due to the tsunami disaster particularly damage to the coastal and marine areas and ecosystems across much of the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Provinces. Chairman CEA Tilak Ranavaraja states that this program has been drawn up based on a National Rapid Environmental Damage Assessment conducted under the direction of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the CEA with financial support from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Staff of the Ministry CEA, CCD, NARA and several professors and academic staff of the Moratuwa, Colombo, Ruhuna, Eastern Province and Jaffna Universities and other experts have carried out this assessment with recommendations for immediate, medium term and long term remedial measures to rehabilitate the environment. These include integration of environmental considerations in the ongoing economic reconstruction and development programs. Among the major environmental issues which will be addressed during the Tsunami reconstruction program are: Disposal of debris, cleaning up of harmful deposits of sea bottom sludge, prevention of over exploitation of river sand,clay and metal, environmental protection of new housing sites cleaning of drinking water wells, awareness programs for conservation/protection of coastal environment, restoration of damaged eco system, establishment of proper solid waste disposal plans including sanitary landfill sites as well as sewage treatment systems for the new cities, carring - out a study to establish contour lines around the coastal line and protection measures for sand dunes which provided protection from the tsunami. |
