Kandy SC on winning spree beat Havies 57-14

by Lal Gunesekera

Defending champions Kandy SC went on a scoring spree yesterday at Havelock Park to trounce Havelocks by 57 points (7 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 14 (1 try, 1 drop goal, 2 penalties) after leading 21-11 at half-time in their Caltex League, Rugby Championship match.

It was a great display by Kandy, who after scoring only three tries in the first-half, cut loose in the second to plant five more. What a delight it was to see Kandy playing together as one unit and indulging in some fine open rugby. This was their third consecutive win - all in Colombo, having earlier beaten Old Zahirians 67-5 and Air Force 48-3.

The Havies in turn really played quite well in the first-half, and the way they cracked up in the second was very surprising indeed. To lose a game by such a large margin of points, leaves one to wonder what really happened. They fared much better last week against CH, though losing 8-15. Coach Tony Amith is an experienced campaigner, and I wonder what he thinks about display of his charges. It was just pathetic the way they cracked up.

At one stage in the first session, Havelocks led 11-7. That was after a try by centre Jagoda, drop by Thajudeen and penalty put over by Saliya Kumara, who also put over a penalty in the second half too.

Upto this stage, Kandy, had scored only one goal through fly-half Fazil Marijan, who h ad a superb game. Then before the breather, burly prop Jeewa Galgamuwa and skipper Sanjeewa Jayasinghe on the right wing, scored two more tries all converted by Nalaka Weerakkody.

After the turn around, after Weerakoddy's penalty in the third minute, an avalanche of tries began for Kandy in the 14th minute through skipper Jayasinghe, followed by No. 8 Imran Bisthamin, Galagamuwa, centre Pradeep Liyanage and Marijan again. Four were converted by Weerakoddy, while Amjad Buksh goalled the last try. Dilroy Fernando refereed.

Today, CR & FC play hosts to Police at Longden Place at 5 p.m.

On Friday, Army beat Old Zahirians by 43 points (5 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) at Longden Place, while Air Force beat Navy by 27 points ( 3 goals, 2 penalties) to 3 (1 penalty) at Ratmalana.
