Centenary big match drawn by Mahil Liyanage, Matara Sports Corr The Centenary big match between Richmond and Mahinda College, Galle ended in a dull and tame draw at Uyanwatta Stadium, Matara yesterday. Put into bat, Mahindians did well to score 186 in 81.5 overs as underdogs and Richmond took a slender 5 runs lead in the 1st innings mainly due to u-17 captain Asith Weerasuriya's superb knock of 91 runs including 9 boundaries off 120 balls. For Mahindians, Buddika top scored with 49 runs and skipper Keerthisingha also contributed valuable 36. For Richmondites, bowling honours were shared by Wijerupa and Lakmal with 3 wickets each. For Mahindians, left-arm leg-spinner Keerthisingha captured 4 wickets. Richmondite Gunatilaka hit the only six of the match. Mahindians were 91 for 5 at the close in 51 overs. For the first time in the history of the match was played outside Galle as the recent tsunami had destroyed the Galle esplanade. Saman Amarasingha and M. M. Mendis officiated the match with Ignasius Anandappa as the match referee. |
