7th SAARC golf championships :

India, Pakistan in finals

by Kandy Sports Corr.

India and Pakistan qualified for finals of the 7th SAARC golf championship for men organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and the Sri Lanka Golf Union, at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella yesterday. This year's final will be a repeat of the last SAARC golf championship finals in which Pakistan pipped India at the post to take the title.

India was the first country to reach the finals when they aggregated a 500 gross total. India and Sri Lanka tied for the second spot with a 308 gross total each. This total was arrived at by taking into account of the two best scores of two individual players. When these is a tie the score of the third player comes into reckoning and it was here that Pakistan wriggled themselves into the finals.

Sri Lanka who were unlikely to be pushed out of the finals will meet Bangladesh to decide the third place today at the same venue.

India owe their excellent performance to the fine play of Jasjeet Singh who made 78 and stroked a good 74 yesterday to total 152. Himmat S Ravi too excellent with identical scores of 76 on both days. Skipper Gagan Verma after his fine score of 74 on the first day, was not his usual self in making 79 yesterday.

Pakistan play was spearheaded by the fine performance of Wasim Rana who after making 85 on the first day, put up a superlative performance yesterday in making 72 gross which is the best individual score of the championship todate.

Vaqas Ahamed made 78 and 78 while Thariq Mohamed 81 and 77.

J. J. Kumar was the pick of the Sri Lanka team when he made 77 and 76 while Mithun Perera got 79 but did a little better yesterday to total 155. Skipper K. Prabagaran got 80 and 79. The scores after yesterdays play.
