Sri Lanka women champs by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy sports Corr. Sri Lanka women's team emerged champions at the 7th SAARC golf championship 2005 after a three cornered tussle at the Victoria golf course at Rajawela yesterday. Excellent weather conditions greeted the women golfers from Sri Lanka, India and Nepal and the fairways were accumulate. Sri Lanka led by Thuhashini Selvaratnam totalled 161 gross on day one and followed with 155 yesterday to aggregate 316. India who finished runners-up got 171 on the first day and 164 yesterday to total 335 gross. Nepal made 214 and 224 to total 438 gross. Sri Lanka owe their victory to the fine performance by its skipper Thuhashini Selvaratnam with an even par made a gross score of 73 and followed with a gross score of 74 with a over par yesterday to total 147 gross, she played to handicap of plus 2. Jackie Dias rendered valuable support with gross scores of 88 and 81. Shalim Malik of India has done well in Colombo earlier this year having won the ladies title at the RCGC. But in this championship she made 87 and fared a little better yesterday to register 81. Her partner Nela Mayhitia made 84 and 83 but that was not good enough to get, the better of the Sri Lanka pair. The ladies from Nepal played well below for as with Swasthike Shrestha registering 108 and 119 and Kesang Chlodenlama making scores of 106 and 105 The scores: Sri Lanka: Champions - Thuhashani Selvaratnam 73 and 74. Jackie Dias 88 and 81. Total 316 India: Runners-up Shalim Malik 87 and 81, Neha Majhista 84 and 83. Total 336. Nepal: Swasthike Shrentha 108 and 119 Kesang Chlodenlama 106 and 105.
