SAGT spurs wheelchair tennis here South Asia Gateway Terminals has not only renewed its Rs. 1 million sponsorship for the second consecutive year for wheelchair tennis in Sri Lanka, but has also granted another Rs. 500,000 for the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) campaign to introduce wheelchair tennis among the civilian population, particularly the youth of the country. SAGT and its CEO, Marciek Kwiatkowski, are happy with the progress of the SLTA's Wheelchair Tennis Committee and a better part of this year's sponsorship will be diverted to a long-term plan for the 2008 Para Olympics in Beijing, China. "The national team is presently preparing for the Invacare World Championship to be staged in Australia in June, after which the disabled Sri Lankans will compete in the Australian, New Zealand and Singapore Open Championships. Between now and 2008, we, will expose all good players at international competitions" said the CEO of SLTA, Lionel Almeida. Major Shiran Abeysekera said that before the Para Olympics in Athens there was a series of tournaments in New Zealand and Australia (Sydney and Melbourne) where Bertie Silva and Manatunga (both from Army) won medals. They qualified to play in Athens, but had to meet world class players and were out of their depth. He disclosed that an active programme has commenced with a dozen immates from the Sevana Lama Niwasa in Kotte and next week a programme will be held at the Sunny Village Orphanage in Mulleriyawa. (L.
