Sri Lanka's duo for World C'ships by Leslie Fernando Two most outstanding swimmers Milinda Wickremasinghe of St. Joseph's College and Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa of Asian International School will represent Sri Lanka at the FINA-conducted World Swimming Championships to be held from June 12 to 17 in Montreal, Canada. The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) selectors Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Azeem Azain, Nishantha Wickremasinghe, Shenuka Mapugoda and Arun Gamlath picked these two swimmers on their performances in the year 2004. The SLASU executive committee which met recently ratified their selection with SSP Kithsiri Dayananda, senior SLASU vice president, as manager and K. G. A. Wilson, national swimming coach as coach, subject for Sports Ministry approval. FINA, the world controlling body, has allocated US dollars one thousand each for two swimmers and two officials for their travel and accommodation expenses. Seventeen-year-old Milinda, a promising swimmer has excelled for St. Joseph's College under the guidance of his coach Ruwan Manawadu. A champion swimmer in the making, he has performed exceptionally well at the National School Games, Senior Schools' Swimming Championships, Age Group Swimming Championships, Short Course National Swimming Championships, Age Group Relay Championships, Pentathlon Swimming Championships and the National Swimming Championships. He has established several records in the under-16 age group. besides representing Sri Lanka at the SAF Games in Islamabad, Pakistan in 2004. Prabha, who is hailed as the best women's swimmer, had the distinction of establishing 17 new meet records and winning all five events for the seventh successive time in year 2004. The 16-year-old Asian International School prodigy will be the youngest Sri Lankan swimmer to compete at a world championships meet. Prabha has been really outstanding in the year 2004. She first represented Musaeus College before joining Asian International School and proved her prowess at the Junior and Senior Schools' Swimming meet, National School Games, Age Group Swimming Championships, Short Course National Swimming Championships, Pentathlon Swimming Championships, Junior and Senior National Swimming Championships. She is also the champion sea swimmer and won the Mt. Lavinia two-mile sea swim in March this year. Prabha will be participating at a foreign meet for the fourth time. Earlier, she swam at the Colombo-Chennai schools' duel, Asian Age Group Swimming Championships in Macau and the SAF Games in Islamabad, Pakistan. |
