Dilip Kumar, ARU Chairman

by Lal Gunesekera

Sri Lanka born Sydney businessman Dilip Kumar has been unanimously elected Chairman of the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) at a meeting of its Board soon after the annual general meeting. He replaces Bob Tucky who stood down after accepting a role in the Executive Committee of the International Rugby Board (IRB).

Dilip Kumar played rugby for Trinity College, Kandy and also for Dickoya when he was a planter. A top athlete on his day at Trinity, Dilip Kumar, who was a good wing three-quarter, migrated to Australia in 1974 and turned out for the Dandenong Rugby Club in Victoria.

Dilip Kumar who is also the Chairman of the New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU), has been a Board member of the ARU since 2000 and was elected to the IRB Council in 2004. His strong passion for the game, vision and commitment has been rewarded with the appointment as Chairman of ARU. He says that he is privileged to accept the position and that rugby is travelling well and his role carries enormous responsibility to ensure the game maintains the momentum in Australia, and that Australia's place in the international rugby community is pre-eminent.

Dilip Kumar has maintained his ties with his motherland and has been a source of inspiration and assistance to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) as well as assisting Mahanama, Isipathana and Trinity in various ways, and was also instrumental in sending several rugby sides from Australia to Sri Lanka as well as coaches, referees and rugby gear.

He and his wife Barbara have been in the forefront in assisting the victims of the Boxing Day tsunami disaster and, together with other prominent international rugby personalities, have launched a 'Rugby Foundation' to raise funds internationally to help those who suffered as a result of the tsunami.
