Intensive training vital for netball poolists "My immediate task is to see that the national pool begins intensive training in preparation for the Asian Senior Championship to be staged in Singapore in September", said the newly elected President of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka Tamara Dharmakeerthi Herath. Mrs. Herath was elected President of the National Federation of Sri Lanka at a special general meeting held at the Sports Medicine Unit of the Sports Ministry on Thursday at Independence Avenue. Her opponent was a former President of NFSL Mrs. Trixie Nanayakkara. Mrs. Herath said that the poolists should be supported with all necessary requirements to be in top form prior to the Asian Netball Championships. The NFSL will make every effort in that connection, defending champions Sri Lanka should fare well to gain selection for the 2006 Commonwealth Games to be held in Australia. I'm planning to hold several seminars, clinics for umpires and other officials in a bid to raise the standard of umpiring. Even the netball coaches will be offered special coaching programs. The netballers should go flat out to retain the Asian title and that Sri Lanka should get into the top ten in the world ranking, she said. Mrs. Herath, a double international in netball and hockey, has reached the apex as a sport administrator. A former Ladies College star sportswoman she has been the NFSL President for five consecutive years. She was also the Chairperson of the Interim Committee of the NFSL twice. She had earlier served as Treasurer, Liaison officer and Chairperson of the selection committee of the NFSL as well. She had the privilege to be a member of the jury at the 1999 World Championships in New Zealand and also served on the five-member committee of the IFNA Marketing Committee. (L. F.) |
