Overall increase in value - added tea exports Sri Lanka's tea exports for the first seven months of this year points to an overall increase in exports of value-added teas over the corresponding months of 2004, while total export quantities for the two years remained around 165 million kilograms. Exports of tea in bulk for the first seven months of this year amounted to 98.84 kilos, down from 110.24 kilos during the corresponding months of 2004, according to the Forbes and Walker (brokers) tea report. Shipments of tea in packets from January to end-July 2005 made up 44.65 million kilos, valued at Rs 10.99 billion bearing an average price of Rs 246.25 per kilo. For January to July 2004, foreign sales of tea in packets made up 37.32 million kilos, netting in Rs 8.72 billion at an average of Rs 233.85 per kilo. Tea in bags for the first seven months of 2005 made up 9.9 million kilos bringing in Rs 5.22 billion at an average price of Rs 527 per kilo. During the corresponding seven months of 2004, 9.7 million kilos of tea in bags were exported, at a value of Rs 4.94 per kilo at an average price of Rs 507.08 per kilo. Instant tea shipments during January/July 2005 made up 577,489 kilos, bringing in Rs 325.62 million and averaging Rs 563.86. Instant tea exports during the first seven months of 2004 made up 1.1 million kilos, bringing in Rs 600.88 million at an average price of Rs 516.01 per kilo. Green tea exports for the first seven months of 2005 amounted to 1.31 million kilos, bringing in forex of Rs 748.01 million, valued at Rs 567.62 per kilo. Green tea exports for the first seven months of 2004 recorded 1.40 million kilos, valued at Rs 668.386 million, at Rs 475.56 per kilo. Other teas exported during the first seven months of 2005 shows a quantity of 6.79 million kilos, amounting to Rs 2.68 billion averaging Rs 394.51 per kilo. Other teas exported during the first seven months of 2004 made up 7.51 million kilos, valued at Rs 2.74 billion, bearing an average price of Rs 365.65 per kilo, according to Forbes and Walker. (EL) |
